Fairfield Man Charged With Lying About Stolen Car

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – A Fairfield resident has been charged with lying to police to hide his role in an accident in Bridgeport, according to police reports.

Antonio Espinoza-Cervantes, 43, of Villa Avenue, called police to report that his brother’s car had been stolen from his driveway July 23. He said he had left the doors unlocked and the keys in the car, according to the police report.

Bridgeport police found the car that day at the scene of a hit-and-run accident in that city, police say. Witnesses described a suspect who ran from the scene the night before, and investigators believe Espinoza-Cervantes was that man, according to police reports.

Fairfield police charged Espinoza-Cervantes with falsely reporting of a crime, a misdemeanor. He was released on a promise to appear in court Oct. 23. Bridgeport police also plan to file motor vehicle charges relating to the accident.
