FAIRFIELD, Conn. –  A 69-year-old Fairfield man died in a rollover crash in front of Fairfield Ludlowe High School on Tuesday afternoon. Police identified the victim as Peter Rainone of Winnepoge Drive.

Rainone’s Jeep Wrangler veered across Unquowa Road and hit a tree at about 12:20 p.m. Tuesday, police say. The SUV then rolled over and came to rest on its passenger side on the grass lining the street near the high school. When emergency crews arrived, Rainone was unconscious and unresponsive.

An off-duty Yonkers firefighter who saw the accident helped the man before paramedics and Fairfield firefighters arrived and took over treatment, Assistant Fairfield Fire Chief Chris Tracy said. Fairfield firefighters pulled the man from the car and put him into the ambulance, which took him to St. Vincent’s Medical Center in Bridgeport. Rainone was pronounced dead when he arrived at the hospital.

Rainone was the only person in the car, and no other vehicles were involved in the accident. Investigators were trying to determine whether the man had medical problems before the crash. The Fairfield Police Accident Investigation Unit was investigating the cause.
