Fairfield Man Kills Himself After Standoff With Police

This story was updated at 1:30 p.m. Sunday. FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Douglas Garni, 40, shot himself to death late Saturday outside his Sunnyridge Avenue residence after a standoff with Fairfield police, authorities said.

According to updated information from the Fairfield Police Department, Garni had barricaded his apartment after learning the police were coming. At 11 p.m. police heard a gunshot in the wooded area behind the apartment, where they quickly found Garni's body.

Police were at the Sunnyridge Avenue condominium with the state medical examiner until about 2 a.m. Sunday. The medical examiner determined that Garni had died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Officers responded to a domestic violence call at the apartment about 7:30 p.m., according to the police report. The woman who made the call had fled the home and reported that her boyfriend was in their apartment threatening to kill himself with a handgun.

Officers attempted for several hours to contact with the man but were unsuccessful.
