FAIRFIELD, Conn. -- Fairfield police charged a New York City man with forgery and interfering with police Tuesday after they chased him through the Staples parking lot on Commerce Drive.

According to the police, a manager from Verizon Wireless called the department after suspecting that a man took two battery packs valued at $99 each. The packs were later found hidden in the store.

When police arrived they saw a man matching the description from the Verizon manager leaving the Staples store. Police approached Daquan Dollar, 26, saying they wanted to ask him some questions, and he reportedly ran from police to a black Chevy Impala.

The car didn't immediately open, Dollar then ran into the bushes in the parking lot, fell, ran back to the car and then into Fairfield Pizza.

Police say that while in Fairfield Pizza, Dollar threw out a white plastic bag and then ran back out into the parking lot where police ordered him to the ground.

The plastic bag, which was retrieved from the garbage,  was lined with tinfoil and duct tape, what police describe as a boosting bag. Dollar also had a magnetic stick in his possession, which police say can be used to remove high-end items from security docks.

While being booked, Dollar gave police his younger brother's name and signed the papers with the wrong name. A fingerprint check revealed his correct name and two outstanding warrants from New Jersey.

Police charged Dollar with two counts of interfering with police, two counts of possessing shoplifting tools, criminal impersonation and forgery in the second degree.

He was held on a $5,000 bond and was given a court date of Sept. 13 in Bridgeport Superior Court.
