While on patrol at about 4:40 p.m., officers "ran" the plates of a vehicle belonging to and driven by Johnny Slade, 50, of Clinton Avenue, and found there was a warrant out for his arrest, police said.

Officers followed the vehicle into the parking lot of McDonald's on Fairfield Avenue, where they approached the vehicle without using their lights, according to police.

When asked whether there was any drug paraphernalia in the car, Slade said no but said others use the vehicle, police said.

A check on Slade's background showed a criminal record, including burglary, larceny and narcotics charges, police said.

Officers were able to identify the female passenger of the vehicle as Cassondra Murphy, 25, of East Avenue, who also had a warrant out for her arrest, police said.

When questioned, Murphy was not forthcoming in her responses, police said. An officer was able to identify a white bottle cap on the upper right hip of her pants, near the zipper, police said.

Officers also noted that Murphy had a something in her right hand, which she held onto tightly and would not turn over, police said.

Because of the difficulty questioning Murphy, the on-duty shift commander approved a strip search, police said. Under Fairfield Police policy, two female officers were dispatched to conduct the search in a private location, according to police.

Officers found 7 grams of crack cocaine during a cavity search of Murphy, who was charged with possession of narcotics, police said.

Slade was also charged with use and possession of drug paraphernalia, police said.

Slade is due to appear in court on March 26 and Murphy on March 31.
