Andrew Hernandez, 34, of Union Avenue, was arrested on a warrant and charged with stealing his grandmother’s debit card and forging five checks in her name, police said.

According to Fairfield police, this isn’t the first time Hernandez has committed such a crime. In 2012, he was imprisoned after he assaulted his grandmother but was released when she decided not to press charges, police said. During that same time, Hernandez also stole $30,000 from his grandparents, police said.

During their investigation, officers said they were able to identify 10 checks with variations of the grandmother’s signature, proving they were forged, police said. The grandmother later identified five of the checks as legitimate, but she had no knowledge of the other five, police said.

The grandparents noticed six one-time ACH automatic withdrawals from their checking account, ranging from $300 to $500 each made to Comcast and United Illuminating, prompting them to alert authorities.

Police said they have surveillance footage of Hernandez making withdrawals from People’s United Banks that were legitimate because the grandmother said she was helping Hernandez financially after he was released from prison.

Hernandez has been charged with five counts of second-degree identity theft, four counts of second-degree forgery, two counts of third-degree forgery and six counts of third-degree computer crime. He was released on $5,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in court on Dec. 2.
