Early on Oct. 18, police responded to an accident in which witnesses told officers a four-door 2010 Nissan was stopped at a red light and didn't move when the light turned. When the car behind the Nissan honked, the Nissan sped forward and hit the telephone pole, police said.
When officers arrived, driver Joshua Paiz-xiquin, 22, was lying on the ground next to the car and complaining of chest pains, police said. Paramedics took him to St. Vincent's Hospital for evaluation.
Paiz-xiquin told officers he had been in New Haven the night before and woke up in an unknown parking lot, police said. He said he was attempting to make the commute to work but didn't remember driving into the pole, only being stopped at the light, police said.
Fairfield police applied for a search warrant, and officers arrested Paiz-xiquin on a charge of driving under the influence Wednesday morning. He was released on $100 bond and given a court date of Jan. 28.
