“This is an exciting time,” Tetreau said Monday. “You’re going to see pink on every street.”

Fairfield residents will also see a pink car on the thoroughfares of Fairfield — sometimes at special events and sometimes on patrol.

The Fairfield Police Department unveiled the cruiser Monday morning, which was shrink-wrapped to promote Pink Pledge.

The pledge is a month-long, community-wide campaign for breast cancer awareness that will raise money for the Norma Pfriem Breast Center, which is located at 111 Beach Road in Fairfield.

Officials from the police department, fire department and the town were on hand during the unveiling.

Paul Miller, whose car dealership sponsored the car, expressed his commitment to breast cancer awareness.

“We are so committed to this organization you have no idea,” Miller, who owns Miller Nissan, said from a podium topped with a pink Fairfield Police hat.

His employees will be also wearing pink shirts at his dealership, he said.

Police Chief Gary MacNamara later took the podium and said that many on the force have relatives who have been affected by breast cancer. He told the small crowd gathered that the police department likes to go the extra mile.

“We’re not only working toward only making Fairfield safer,” MacNamara said. “We’re working toward making Fairfield healthier.”

No particular officer is assigned to the pink vehicle. Rather, officers will take turns driving the cruiser, according to police.

Survivors of breast cancer are invited to sign the car, police said.

The Fairfield Fire Department has taken the pledge, too. Fire officials had put a pink ribbon decal on one of the engines, which was on display at the Monday event.

Tetreau said he hopes the pink pledge goes beyond the fire and police departments.

“We want everyone in the community to take the pledge,” he said.

Organizers hope the events promote breast cancer awareness and early detection in addition to raising money for the center.

The Pink Pledge kickoff is scheduled for Thursday at the Sherman Green Gazebo. Participants will line up at the center’s offices at 111 Beach Road for a stroll at 5 p.m. to the gazebo. Fairfield Police’s pink cruiser will lead the way.

Stick-It Graphics was also a donor to the car. Pink Pledge’s main sponsor is Merrill Lynch/Bank of America Corp.
