FAIRFIELD, Conn. — A Fairfield Police narcotics detective who is also the son of the mayor of Norwalk is due in court Friday to face charges of stealing drugs from cases he was involved in, according to the Connecticut Post.

Stephen Rilling, an 18-year veteran of the Fairfield Police Department, is accused of stealing heroin from the department for his own use, police said.

His arraignment is expected Friday morning, and the case is expected to be transferred to Superior Court in Milford, the Post said.

Rilling, 40, signed out more than 225 folds of heroin, over 800 OxyContin pills and a few packets of cocaine from the department’s evidence room on the false pretext of needing to have the drugs tested, the Connecticut Post said. The drugs came from raids, undercover operations and from the homes of people who had overdosed, according to the Post.

Police learned of the thefts on April 12 and placed Rilling on administrative leave while they launched an internal investigation, which is still ongoing. They subsequently launched a criminal investigation and issued a warrant for Rilling's arrest. The thefts of drugs occurred between June 2016 and February 2017, police said.

Rilling was arrested last Friday and charged with third-degree computer crime, second-degree larceny, second-degree forgery, possession of narcotics, false entry by an officer or agent of a public community, and tampering with evidence. He was released on $5,000 bond.

Rilling is the son of Harry Rilling, the mayor of Norwalk and the former chief of the Norwalk Police Department.
