Fairfield Police: Fake Contractor Distracts Couple While House Is Robbed

FAIRFIELD, Conn. -- A man claiming to be the contractor for a neighbor lured an elderly couple into their backyard while an accomplice entered their home and stole jewelry Tuesday morning, Fairfield police said.

At about 10:30 a.m., a man posing as a contractor persuaded an elderly couple to accompany him to their Suzanne Circle backyard under the guise of checking trees that he needed to cut down as part of a project, police said.

While they were in the backyard, a second suspect entered their home and took jewelry, police said.

One suspect was described as a 5-foot-8 Hispanic man in early 40s with short dark hair and a round face, police said. Police had no description of the other suspect.

Police say the scam may be linked to men who claim to be driveway pavers who offer to seal driveways at low prices while gaining access to the home or gain additional money by intimidating homeowners to pay more.

Residents are asked to report any suspicious incidents to the Fairfield Police at 203-254-4800, or by sending an Anonymous Tip by texting "FPD" along with your tip information to CRIMES (274637).
