George Verras, 55, of Bridgeport, was stopped by Stop & Shop’s loss prevention officials as headed out of the store with items hidden in his garments, according to Fairfield Police.
While on his way to a back office with two loss prevention officers, Verras told police he panicked and ran away, shoving one loss prevention officer against a wall in the process, police said.
When police officers arrived, loss prevention officials directed them to the parking lot of the nearby Bank of America, police said. Verras was there trying to hide in a bush and discarding the stolen items under a dumpster, authorities said.
Officers were able to locate Verras and the stolen items, police said.
A knife sharpener, kitchen tongs, a bottle of Advil and a razor were taken, police said.
Verras was charged with sixth-degree larceny, third-degree robbery and third-degree assault. He was given a court date of April 13 and released on $750 bond.

- Freddrick Freshley, a 46-year-old Bridgeport man, was arrested and charged with sixth-degree larceny after he tried to exit the same Stop & Shop with nearly $194 worth of beer, police said. Loss prevention officials were able to stop Freshley from leaving with the unpaid items, police said. He was found pacing in front of the store when officers arrived, police said. He was given a court date of April 13 and was released on a promise to appear in court.
