“They are true heroes,” Norwalk Police Chief Thomas Kulhawik told an audience gathered Wednesday morning in front of the police station on Monroe Street.
Sgt. David Orr, president of the police union, said that nationwide, every three days a police officer leaves for work and doesn’t return home.
“They live to serve their community,” Orr said. “Sadly, this sometimes comes at a price.”
Mayor Harry Rilling said the Norwalk Police Department recognizes fallen officers each year at a service, but words can hardly express the magnitude of their sacrifices.
“Year after year those words seem so inadequate to express our gratitude for what they do for us and what they have done for us,” Rilling said.
State Sen. Bob Duff, who represents Norwalk and Darien, said the community supports and appreciates the work of every police officer.
“We need to be reminded of their sacrifices each and every day,” Duff said. “Most of us go on with our lives day to day, put our heads on a pillow at night knowing that we have protectors and those who will give up their lives for our safety."
U.S. Attorney Deirdre Daly also attended the event. She said officers always head to work every day work not knowing what situations they will encounter.
“Every day when you get up and go to work, you don’t know what danger awaits you — a traffic stop, an execution of a search warrant, a domestic violence call — could be routine or not,” Daly said. “But you do it anyway. You do it for us.”
Police officers from other towns, including Greenwich and Fairfield, also attended the service. The service also included vocal performances, taps and a flyover.
