FAIRFIELD, Conn. – A Bridgeport man was charged with stealing clothing from a charity donation box after stopping him for not having a front license plate Saturday evening, Fairfield police said.
Officers stopped Wallace Stovall, 54, near the Bridgeport line for not having a front license plate, police said. During the stop, an officer saw several plastic bags with clothes spilling out all over the car, police said.
Stovall and his passenger allowed the officer to search the car, police said. He later admitted that the bags of clothing had been taken from the Planet Aid storage unit at the Stop & Shop on Villa Avenue, police said.
The unit had a padlock, which Stovall broke, then he climbed in, took several bags of clothing and returned to Bridgeport, police said.
Stovall was charged with misuse of plates, operating an unregistered vehicle, driving with out a license, driving without a front plate and sixth-degree larceny. He was released on a written promise to appear in court Nov. 12.
