The car owner returned to find a man in a red shirt taking items out of his car, police said. He confronted the man, who then took off north on the Merritt Parkway in his vehicle, police said.

Officers later tracked the car's license plate, which was registered to Stephen M. Carroll, of 101 Colony St., Bridgeport, police said.

Police said Carroll stole a car battery valued at $120 and assorted hand tools valued at $100 from the 1997 Black Nissan 200SX on May 19.

The victim also found that one of his car windows was broken, which police said would cost $250 to replace, police said.

Officers arrested Carroll on Friday and charged him with third-degree burglary, second-degree criminal mischief and sixth-degree larceny.

He was held on $5,000 bond. His court date was Aug. 21.
