Fairfield Police: Pedestrian Hit; Driver Charged

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – A Fairfield man was charged with driving under the influence after  a pedestrian was struck early Saturday morning and suffered a minor injury, police say.

The pedestrian told police that he was crossing Kings Highway East near Longfellow Avenue just after midnight Saturday. While crossing he heard an oncoming car accelerate, pushing him onto the median in the road, according to the police report. The man was taken to St. Vincent’s Hospital for treatment of a minor ankle injury, police say.

Witnesses confirmed the pedestrian’s story and gave police a license plate number for the car, according to police reports. The car was traced to a home on Greenfield Street and the driver, Michael Michalski, 48, police say. Michalski said he did not remember a run-in with a pedestrian, according to the arrest report. He failed field sobriety tests while talking to officers, police say.

Michalski was charged with driving under the influence and evading responsibility, both misdemeanors. He was released after posting a $500 bond, and is due in court on Jan. 22.
