FAIRFIELD, Conn. -- The Fairfield Police Department is raising money to help pay for its K9 Unit through a GoFundMe effort to help keep the unit operating.
Formed in 2010, the K9 dog doesn't replace a police officer, but serves as a valuable tool in combating and deterring crime. It is often the determining factor in conducting a search or achieving a peaceful arrest, police said.
The dogs are used in a variety of dangerous situations including:
- Building searches
- Tracking and searching for missing persons, suspects or evidence
- Apprehension of criminal suspects
- Narcotic raids and searches
- Crowd control for violent and/or unruly crowds
- Handler and officer protection
The Fairfield Police Department's K-9 unit is entirely paid for by corporate and private donations from the community. To date, the department has raised $1,900. You can donate any amount at https://www.gofundme.com/p8hz2jkg .
