A Mill Plain resident told police that a man knocked on his door at about 8:20 a.m. Thursday asking to borrow a screwdriver. The man said he had lost his key to his moped and needed a screwdriver to start the vehicle, according to police reports. The resident loaned him the tool and called police.

Officers determined that the moped did not belong to the suspect and had been stolen from the nearby Fairfield Center train station, police say. The vehicle’s estimated value is $2,600. During the arrest, officers also found a crack pipe in the man’s pocket, according to police reports.

Edwin Diaz, 47, was charged with fifth-degree larceny, first-degree criminal trover and possession of drug paraphernalia. He was held on $10,000 bond, and is due in court July 2.
