According to Lt. James Perez, Fairfield Police’s PBA has taken the lead on organizing the event for more than 10 years to provide needy children with holiday gifts.

“We encourage everyone to give,” Perez told the Daily Voice. “We want the community to feel involved. One way to do so is to donate a toy to the PBA’s Toys For Tots drive.”

Charitable donations can be made at drop off points located at each of Fairfield’s public schools, the town recreation center, police headquarters and at the town clerk’s office.

Jeff Wickman, one of the officers heading the department's biggest fundraiser of the season, said all gifts will be accepted, as long as they are unwrapped and are not weapons and do not resemble weapons.

“We’ll accept anything that’s reasonable, but I would say no to weaponry,” Wickman said. “If it’s something like a Nerf gun, we’ll accept that as well.”

Wickman said there is no need to fear donations that include small parts, such as Legos, as long as they are in a sealed box. There also is no minimum or maximum price or quantity of toys donated, he said.

The Scandinavian Club of Fairfield will hold a toy run on the morning of Dec. 21. On Monday, Dec. 22, Wickman and a fellow officer will drive the toys to Bridgeport Hospital before heading to New York City to drop the remaining gifts off at other distribution points.
