FAIRFIELD, Conn. — A Milford man was up a creek without a paddle when officers found him loading three stolen kayaks into his Ford Expedition at Jennings Beach early Saturday, Fairfield police said.

A neighbor reported a strange sound in the parking lot just after 1 a.m., police said. Officers on the scene found Samuel Schroeder, 18, of Milford Point Road, with a blue kayak on his car roof and yellow and red kayaks loaded in the back of the vehicle, police said.

At first, Schroeder said the kayaks belonged to his girlfriend, then he said he took them because he needed money, police said.

Police said he cut through ropes holding the three kayaks in storage on the beach. They are valued at $750 in total.

Schroeder was charged with criminal mischief and fifth-degree larceny. He was released on $300 bond and is scheduled to appear in court on Feb. 8, police said.
