Officer Wells and K9 Jagger, along with Officer Kaesmann and K9 Maverick, have completed certification training and will officially graduate from the K9 Training Program next week.

The Fairfield Police Department will host a graduation ceremony to honor the graduations of the K9 Training Program, including officers and K9's from its own department as well as those from the Trumbull Police Department, the Seymour Police Department and the Derby Fire Department.

The ceremony will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Feb. 11, at Fairfield Police Headquarters, 100 Reef Road, Fairfield.

The Fairfield Police K9 Unit was established in 2010, after the approval from the Chief of Police, First Selectman and Board of Police Commissioners.

The K9 Unit does not replace a police officer, but serves as a valuable tool in combating and deterring crime. It is often the determining factor in conducting a search or achieving a peaceful arrest.

The K9 Unit may be used for the following incidents:

  • Building searches
  • Tracking and searching for missing persons, suspects or evidence
  • Apprehension of criminal suspects
  • Narcotic raids and searches
  • Crowd control for violent and/or unruly crowds
  • Handler and officer Protection

The Fairfield Police Department K9 Unit has set up a GoFundMe page to help support its K9 Unit. In a post at the GoFundMe page, the department said its K-9 Unit is entirely funded by corporate and private donations from the community.

So far, the Fairfield Police K9 Unit has raised $150, but its goal is to hit $16,000. To make a donation to the Fairfield Police K9 Unit, CLICK HERE.
