FAIRFIELD, Conn. - A Pope Street resident who spotted an open door on his car called Fairfield police and apprehended one of the suspects himself late Saturday, police said.

When officers arrived, the resident had been able to hold a 17-year-old boy, but a second suspect had left the area, police said.

The man told officers that he saw his car door was open and two teenagers were leaving the area, one holding what looked like his car battery charger, police said. He was able to hold the teen that had his charger but was unable to stop both of them, police said.

In the teen's backpack officers found more than 50 items typically found in cars, including several cellphones, flashlights, GPS units, binoculars and a pocket knife, police said.

The teen was charged sixth-degree larceny, third-degree burglary, possession of burglary tools, sixth-degree conspiracy to commit larceny and third-degree conspiracy to commit burglary.

He was interviewed by police with his father present and released on a promise to appear in court March 27.
