Fairfield Suspect Charged With Stealing Body Wash

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – A Bridgeport man accused of shoplifting body wash at BJ's was arrested Wednesday despite changing his clothes in an attempt to elude Fairfield Police, according to police reports.

Jose Fontanez, 36, is charged with stealing approximately $83 worth of body wash from BJ’s Wholesale Club on Black Rock Turnpike. The suspect grabbed several bottles of the item and ran out of the store, security guards told police. The first responding officer saw the suspect run through the store’s parking lot and into a nearby wooded area, according to the police report.

Soon after, an officer and the store manager saw a man who fit the suspect’s description, but wearing a different jacket, riding a bicycle on Commerce Drive. The manager identified the rider as the suspect and he was stopped by police. When questioned, he led officers to the location of the stolen items and his original jacket, police say.

Fontanez was charged with sixth-degree larceny and interfering with police, both misdemeanors. He was released after posting a $250 bond and is due in court Oct. 9.
