Patricia Nelson, 63, of Jarvis Court, was stopped by loss prevention officials on Saturday, Feb. 28, and detained at the Stop & Shop until police arrived after they noticed she had placed six bottles of the baking ingredient in her purse, police said.

When questioned by officers, Nelson said she needed the vanilla extract to bake a cake, according to police. However, Nelson later admitted that she puts the vanilla extract in her coffee to get intoxicated, police said.

One officer noted the high alcohol content of the vanilla extract, authorities said, although it is not a controlled substance.

Nelson attempted to conceal the theft by purchasing two frozen TV dinners, a carton of cream and a bottle of Gatorade, all of which she paid for before her attempted escape, police said.

Nelson was charged with sixth-degree larceny. She was released on a promise to appear in court on March 9.
