Southern Connecticut Gas also shut down service at 605 Fairfield Beach Road at about 4 p.m., said Assistant Fire Chief Christopher Tracy, the public information officer.

No combustible gas readings were found in any residence, however, and all occupants were allowed to return to their homes, Tracy said.

The odor of gas permeated the area, but there were no life hazards, he said. Homes on either side of 605 Fairfield Beach Road were evacuated as a precaution, and police and fire vehicles blocked the area to pedestrian and vehicular traffic.

Officials used the reverse 911 system to alert residents of the immediate Fairfield Beach Road area as well as lower Reef and Rowland roads and Edward Street about the incident, the Post said.
