FAIRFIELD, Conn. - An unoccupied red Pontiac Grand Am was destroyed in a blaze early Thursday on Park Drive, Fairfield police and fire officials said.

Fairfield police officers and firefighters were called to a car fire shortly after 1 a.m. Thursday. According to first responders, a neighbor reported the car was fully engulfed in flames. First responders quickly determined that the car was unoccupied.

An engine and ladder truck arrived at 1:13 a.m., extinguishing the fire before leaving shortly after 2 a.m., fire officials said.

The cause of the blaze remains unknown, but police said it started on the front passenger side.

The rear license plate was hanging off the car, police said. After checking the number, police determined the plate was stolen and had last been registered in August 2010. Police also found that the plate had been checked by departments across the state.

The cause of the fire, and the reason the car was left at the site, was being investigated by both the police and fire departments.
