Hearing Set To Extradite Suspect In Murder, Abduction Back To Bridgeport

Oscar Hernandez, 39, was arrested in Pennsylvania on Feb. 24 following a multi-state manhunt after police discovered the body of 26-year-old Nidia Gonzalez in her Bridgeport home.

Her daughter was missing and police issued an Amber Alert. Hernandez was taken into custody after he crashed his car in State College, Pa., and the young girl was safely recovered, police said.

Hernandez appeared in court in Bellefonte, Pa., last week for a preliminary hearing on a number of charges in that jurisdiction, including evading police and endangering the welfare of a child. However, that hearing was delayed due to the lack of a certified interpreter, according to the Centre Daily Times.

Bridgeport police are looking to extradite Hernandez back to Connecticut so he can face murder charges here, but they will have to wait until at least April 5, according to the Connecticut Post. That is the date set for a hearing where Hernandez will either waive or fight extradition, the Post reported.

Hernandez had previously been deported back to his native El Salvador in 2013 after he was convicted of assaulting a former girlfriend in Stamford, according to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials. It is unclear when or how he re-entered the United States.

ICE has placed an immigration detainer on Hernandez, meaning he will be deported again after his criminal charges are resolved in the U.S.
