FAIRFIELD, Conn. ‒ (Update, 11:30 A.M. ) A man was found dead of a gunshot to the head Monday morning in a parking lot on Chambers Street in Fairfield, police report.

The man was described by police as middle-aged and white. Police did not disclose his identity except to say that he is from the Fairfield County area. 

He died of one gunshot wound and a pistol was found near his body, police said. The body was lying near the driver's side door of a black SUV with out-of-state plates, and the door was open, police said.

Authorities said the body was discovered in the parking lot of the Universal Thread Co., 30 Chambers St., by the owner when he arrived at around 7 a.m. 

The State Police Major Crimes Unit was on the scene trying to determine if the death was a homicide or suicide.
