Man Sleeping Behind Wheel In Fairfield Charged With DUI, Heroin Possession

FAIRFIELD, Conn. - A Fairfield police sergeant out on DUI patrol spotted a man sleeping behind the wheel of a car on Commerce Drive on Saturday afternoon, police said.

The sergeant asked the driver, Thomas Obst, 40, of Monroe, to perform the standard field sobriety tests, which he did not pass, police said.

During a search of the car, officers found 20 individually wrapped folds in a plastic bag under the emergency brake, police said. The substance in the folds field tested positive for heroin, police said. Officers found a total of 5.8 grams of the substance in the car, police said. 

Obst was charged with a misdemeanor summons of driving under the influence and given $100 cash bond. He was also charged with possession of narcotics and posted $5,000 bond. He is due in court on both charges on March 27.
