Early Tuesday, a Fairfield resident reported to police that a suspicious man in his yard ran when he attempted to get his attention by tapping on the window, police said.
Officers arrived and after a quick investigation found Robert Ford, 38, of Bridgeport, carrying a black backpack on Melville Avenue, police said. Officers checked the bag and found items that were believed to be stolen, police said.
Ford was found in an area where cars had been broken into overnight, police said. When police looked in Ford's backpack, they found items commonly taken from cars, such as a GPS unit, a cellphone, a large amount of loose change, a wallet and cigarettes, police said.
Ford was questioned and later admitted he had taken them from several vehicles in the Melville area, police said. Officers determined the victim’s identity and found the cellphone was taken from a vehicle that was parked in a garage, police said.
He was charged with first-degree burglary, two counts of third-degree burglary, possession of burglary tools, larceny by possession, fifth-degree larceny and sixth-degree larceny.
Ford was taken into custody and with bond set at $10,000. He is due at Bridgeport Superior Court on Aug. 15.
