Sgt. Robert Shawinsky said the man, who police have dealt with in the past, first attracted attention by walking barefoot into the Bedford Street headquarters at 2 p.m. He approached the bulletproof glass that protects the desk sergeants and slipped a quarter into the slot where police and civilians can hand one another information.

He then walked into the public access bathroom, only to emerge a short time later completely naked, Shawinsky said. The man walked back to the window to tell the surprised desk sergeant that "he was working on his routine," Shawinsky said.

The man was transported to Stamford Hospital for examination, police said. His name was not released.
