Monroe Man Charged With Carrying Firearm During DUI Stop

FAIRFIELD, Conn. — A drunken driver was found in possession of a firearm and with blood on his clothing and his car during a traffic stop, Fairfield Police said.

An officer pulled over William S. Jones of 26 Ryegate Terrace, Monroe, after seeing him driving 50 feet on the wrong side of the Post Road on Aug. 8, police said. While searching Jones, officers found a Glock 42 .380-caliber gun with a magazine with six rounds, police said. 

Although Jones had the proper permit for the weapon, it is illegal to carry a firearm while under the influence of alcohol or drugs, police aid.

Police said Jones exhibited severely slurred speech and failed field sobriety tests. 

Officers also found drops of blood on Jones’ clothing and on the side of a vehicle door, police said.

Jones told police that he had been walking between Ana Liffey's toward Crave Fairfield when a tall white male, who Jones said he did not know, punched him in the mouth. He refused medical attention, police said.

Jones was arrested and charged with carrying a firearm under the influence of alcohol, driving under the influence of alcohol and failure to drive right. 

Jones was released on $500 bond. His court date was set for Aug. 17, police said.
