Motorcyclist Who Fled Crash In Trumbull Apprehended After School Lockdown

TRUMBULL, Conn. -- A Trumbull motorcyclist was arrested after police said he fled the scene of an accident Friday morning while armed with a handgun, causing a school nearby to be put on a lockdown.

Police were called at 7:37 a.m. to a multi-vehicle accident involving a motorcycle on White Plains Road at Wesley Drive, according to Trumbull police.

Witnesses reported the motorcycle operator fled the scene on foot and was armed with a handgun, police said.

Christian Heritage School was placed on lockdown, according to police.

With the help of witnesses, the male was located on Twitchgrass Road and taken into custody by Officers Michael Tackas and James Marino.

Joseph Mezzanotte, 24 was found to have a valid pistol permit and had not displayed the firearm, according to police.

He was treated for accident-related injuries and transported to the hospital, said police.

Police are investigating the accident and charges are pending against Mezzanotte.

Christian Heritage School resumed normal activities.

White Plains Road at Wesley Road was closed to southbound traffic following the accident but has since reopened.
