“This is an enormous responsibility you are undertaking. As police officers, we count on you each and every day to keep our children and families safe. I know you are up to the challenge," Finch said at the graduation.

Finch was joined by U.S. Sens. Richard Blumenthal and Chris Murphy, and several police chiefs from across the state at the Oct. 2 ceremony

In addressing the new class, Finch highlighted how important police officers are to protecting kids and families.

“I can’t imagine a more rewarding career than serving this great city,” said Finch. “Always remember that the vast majority of our residents are honest, hard-working people who go to work every day so they can pay their bills, so they can feed their children and so they can provide for their families. That is the Bridgeport I know. And that is the Bridgeport that I know you will protect and serve.”

Of the 28 new officers, seventeen will serve Bridgeport, five will serve Hamden, four will serve Norwalk, one will serve Fairfield, and one will serve Greenwich. These newly sworn in officers represent the 36th class to graduate from the Bridgeport Police Academy.

During the ceremony, Bridgeport Police Chief Joseph Gaudett noted that in law enforcement, officers often encounter people in their worst moments when they’re in crisis.

“We must be the voice of reason amid sudden chaos,” said Gaudett. “When you put your hand up and take the oath, you are assuming an awesome responsibility. Every time you put on that uniform and badge, how you conduct yourself reflects on all of us. Make us proud. Get to know your community. Remember your training. I ask only two things of you: Do your job well and with honor. And come home safe.”
