At 1:30 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 26, officers responded to a burglar alarm at Scooter's Deli Mart at 484 Bridgeport Ave. in Shelton, police said.
Upon arrival, officers discovered the glass was smashed on the front door and the store had been burglarized, police said.
The surveillance video showed two men pulling up to the convenience store in a silver Pontiac just before burglarizing it, police said.
As it turned out, Shelton police Detective Christopher Nugent was working an overnight private-duty job nearby on Bridgeport Avenue. He saw a silver Pontiac pass him just before the burglary and happened to take note of the license plate, police said.
A be-on-the-lookout alert was put out to surrounding towns for the Pontiac, police said. At about 3 a.m., Bridgeport Police stopped a silver Pontiac matching the description of the one used in the burglary, Shelton police said.
Shelton officers headed to Bridgeport and spoke with the driver, 21-year-old Kenny Xavier Tapia of Bridgeport, police said.
Tapia was wearing clothing similar to that of one of the men in the burglary, police said. Burglary tools and rolls of coins were also located in Tapia’s car, police said.
Tapia was arrested and charged with third-degree burglary, sixth-degree larceny and second-degree criminal mischief.
He was arraigned at Derby Superior court on Wednesday.
Officers are continuing to investigate the burglary and additional arrests were expected, Shelton police said.
