FAIRFIELD, Conn. - Officers were called to a home on Jackman Avenue in Fairfield on Tuesday night after a man broke a window on the second story in an attempt to get into the house to retrieve his belongings, police said.

When the first officer arrived, Garret Denniston, 35, of Fairfield, was sitting in a 2011 BMW outside the home where his family still lives, police said.

Denniston attempted to enter the home through the front door and back door unsuccessfully before setting up a ladder to a second floor window, police said. He took the screen off and broke the glass pane in order to get to his belongings, police said.

A female family member told officers that Denniston hadn't lived in the house since mid-February and that there is a civil agreement stating that she has full possession of the house, police said.

Denniston told police he had gone to the house to get his belongings at an agreed upon time and that he had not broken the window but had accidentally fallen through, police said. He had cuts on his hands, the police report said.

Officers took Denniston into custody and charged him with second-degree breach of peace and released him on $1,000 bond with conditions of release and a court date of April 9.
