FAIRFIELD, Conn. – A Bridgeport man was charged with theft from a customer at a Fairfield grocery store. Eddie Navarro, 55, was seen on video taking a wallet out of a woman’s purse, police said.

A Trumbull resident told police she discovered her wallet was missing from her purse while she was browsing the shelves at Stop & Shop on Kings Highway East. The wallet was later recovered by an unidentified man in a parking lot nearby; cash and credit cards had been removed, according to police.

The store's video surveillance showed a man meeting Navarro’s description stop near the woman and take the wallet when she turned her back on her cart, police said.

Navarro was contacted in Bridgeport shortly after the theft, and during an interview, he admitted being involved, according to a police report. Navarro had recently been released from prison after being found guilty of a similar theft in Stamford last August, according to state judicial records.

Navarro was charged with sixth-degree larceny, a misdemeanor, on Tuesday afternoon. He was released on a $1,500 bond.
