According to the police report, the victims told officers that they had received a phone call Friday with a District of Columbia area code. The caller said they were from the IRS and told they owed $9,000, police said.
The victims were then given another number to contact and told to purchase gift cards from the Home Depot in the amount owed, police said. The victims purchased 18 gift cards for the $9,000 and called the number only to be told that they owed another $6,000, police said.
At this point, the victims became skeptical and went to their bank, which encouraged them to contact police.
Fairfield police said they are currently investigating the incident.
