At about 1 p.m. police received a report of an unoccupied kayak floating one-third of a mile off the Soundview Drive and Hillspoint Road section of Compo Beach.
Upon arriving, an officer learned that one person was stranded on the rock island and a second person had kayaked out to reclaim the unoccupied kayak, police said.
The officer was attempting to maintain a visual on the kayaker while a Westport Marine Police lieutenant and third officer launched the police rescue inflatable to assist, according to police.
While en route, officers learned that the kayaker was experiencing trouble and was unable to work his way back to shore due to the offshore wind, said police.
The kayaker was rescued about 1.5 miles offshore while holding onto oyster markers in the water, according to police.
The rescued kayaker was safely brought on board without incident, police said.
The second person was recovered from the island, and both were dropped off on Compo Beach with the two kayaks, according to police.
Neither person had floatation devices with them or in the kayaks at the time of the incident, said police.
The water temperature in Long Island Sound is in the upper 40s. The high temperature in Connecticut on Wednesday was in the upper 50s with winds of 5 to 10 mph.
