FAIRFIELD, Conn. – A Fairfield woman paid rent to a “landlord” who doesn’t actually own the house she thought she had leased, according to a police report.
A woman contacted Fairfield Police last week to check on the Fleming Lane home of her late mother. The house was supposed to be unoccupied, but the owner became suspicious when she received an unusually high electric bill, police say. Officers arrived to find a woman living in the house.
The resident told police that she had arranged a lease of the home through Craigslist in November, according to police reports. She met a man who identified himself as “Randall Hill,” and gave him $2,700 as a deposit. She also told police that she had trouble getting the keys to the house from the man, but he eventually left a key outside, which did not work. She had not had contact with the man since, according to the report.
The co-executor of the estate told police that she did not authorize anyone to arrange a sublet of the home, police say. Detectives are still investigating the case. Anyone with information should contact the Fairfield Police at 203-254-4840.
