Rocco Maimone, of Huntington, was traveling north on South Benson Road early Friday when he veered off the road and onto the curb, police said. He struck the UI pole and snapped it in half, police said.

A resident who lives near the scene of the accident described hearing a loud noise similar to a dump truck emptying a load of trash onto the street, officials told Daily Voice on Friday.

The witness told police that she called to the driver to see whether he was OK and let the driver know she would be calling the police, officers said. Maimone asked the witness not to call police before leaving the scene, police said.

The driver headed toward Reef Road, traveling on Post Road, before “hitching a ride” back down to Fairfield Beach, according to Lt. James Perez said.

Police said they found Maimone intoxicated and stumbling around a yard on Fairfield Beach Road. Officers were fearful he had suffered internal injuries as a result of the crash, provided him with a medical transport to Bridgeport Hospital, police said.

When questioned by police, Alexander Walter - the vehicle's owner - said he was unaware that Maimone had taken the vehicle and had only just realized the key to his Jeep was missing from his key chain.
