Fernando Cortinhas, 31, of Newtown Lane, was charged with third-degree strangulation and breach of peace after he threw and smashed an iPhone and then grabbed the woman outside the SportsPlex on Mill Plain Road shortly before 1:30 a.m., police said.

The victim told officers they were arguing because she wanted him to leave his current relationship, police said. Witnesses took her inside a nearby restaurant and called the police.

Cortinhas was released after posting $10,000 bond, police said. He was scheduled to appear in court Aug. 29.
