Westport Police were dispatched to 495 Post Road East at around 6:45 p.m. on Sunday, July 16 on a report of a larceny. The complainant told police that he believed his employee, 38-year-old Michael Devoe of Westport, had stolen from him, according to police. Devoe had been an employee since September of 2016, and had direct access to the victim's personal property, police said.
The complainant told police that an incident had occurred that morning that made him suspicious that Devoe had stolen from him. That morning, Devoe had called the Westport Police Department to report that a vehicle registered to his employer had been stolen from the lot at 495 Post Road East. Devoe had permission to drive the vehicle, and the employer, who was out of town, was made aware of the theft, police said.
A short time later, Devoe contacted police again to say that the vehicle had been found in Bridgeport, and that some friends had taken it as a joke, police said. The employer did not believe this, and when he returned to Westport he checked his home as well as his business to see if anything was missing, police said.
It was determined that at least two watches, with a combined value of $35,000, as well as some women's jewelry had been taken, according to police. Devoe admitted that he stole the items, police said.
Devoe was placed under arrest and charged with first-degree larceny. He was held on a $25,000 bond and brought to court the next day.
