FAIRFIELD, Conn. - A man attempting to rob the Citgo gas station on the Post Road in Fairfield early Saturday said he had a bomb hidden in a trash can, Fairfield police said.
Employees at the Citgo told officers that a man walked into the store shortly after midnight Saturday, told them there was a bomb hidden in a trash can on the property and demanded that they opened the cash register, police said. When employees refused to comply, he took off on foot toward South Pine Creek Road, police said.
Norwalk and Metropolitan Transportation Authority K-9 units responded and checked the area for explosives, police said. No bombs were found. The Norwalk police dog tracked the suspect to Old Field and Mona Terrace, police said.
The suspect was described as a white man, 5 foot, 8 inches tall, and wearing a black hoodie with purple and green details and a LRG logo on the back. He had a white tank top pulled over his face when in the store, police said.
Police were continuing to investigate.
