The calls started coming into police headquarters on Saturday morning, when a Reef Road woman reported someone had taken five new iPhone 7s, valued at $4,000, from her unlocked Lexus RX 350 parked outside her home, police said. She believes the theft occurred between 6 p.m. Friday and 8 a.m. Saturday, police said.
More calls came in Sunday morning, as residents awoke to find their cars rummaged through and valuables missing. Several Lally Boulevard residents reported their unlocked cars had been opened and searched, including one who reported a $20 phone charger was missing, police said.
A Rowland Road resident reported $80 missing from a wallet left in an unlocked car parked in the driveway and a neighbor on the same street said someone took a $500 iPod from his car, which was unlocked and parked in the home’s driveway, police said.
A Hurd Street resident found his unlocked car’s door open and $600 in cash missing, police said.
On Fern Street, someone rummaged through two unlocked cars in a driveway, making off with a pair of Ray Ban sunglasses worth $150, police said.
Someone searched two more unlocked cars on Catherine Terrace, taking two sets of keys to a Honda Pilot, police said.
“Residents should be aware to lock vehicles whenever unattended and not leave valuables in plain sight,” said Lt. Robert Kalamaras. “These are crimes of opportunity.”
