The driver, Matthew Mortara, 24, of South King Street, was charged with two counts of possession of narcotics, possession of drug paraphernalia, driving under the influence, failure to drive right and failure to maintain the proper lane, police said.

Police received numerous calls about a tow truck driving recklessly in the area of Tunxis Hill Road and Villa Avenue around 6:30 p.m. One came from the owner of the vehicle being towed, who was driving behind the tow truck and saw it cross the yellow line and drift into oncoming traffic, police said.

Officers stopped Mortara and found him in possession of heroin and Subuxone, a drug used in opioid treatment, police said.

He was released on $100 bond and a promise to appear in court on June 23.
