Troopers were focusing on aggressive/reckless drivers, distracted drivers, speeders, seatbelt violations and intoxicated drivers. Sobriety checkpoints and targeted DUI patrols are also in place over the entire long weekend.
The final statistics, issued by Trooper Kelly Grant, cover from 12:01 a.m. July 1 to 11:59 p.m. July 4:
- Total accidents: 315 (up from 170 accidents in 2015)
- Accidents with injury: 45 (down from 48 in 2015)
- Fatal accidents: 2 (I-95 E. Haven on 7/2 and I-95 Westbrook on 7/3)
- DUI arrests: 39 (up from 33 last year)
- Speeding citations: 1,227 (up from 859 in 2015)
- Other hazardous moving violation tickets: 2,913 (up from 2,461 last year)
In the fatal accidents, a 68-year-old Trumbull woman was killed in a six-vehicle pileup Saturday morning on I-95 in East Haven . Five people had to be extricated from the most heavily damaged vehicle, including the Trumbull woman, who was a back-seat passenger. The crash also involved at least one tractor-trailer.
In the other fatal accident, a 20-year-old Westbrook man was struck and killed while walking on I-95 early Sunday between Exits 65 and 66 in Westbrook, according to the Hartford Courant .
The death of a 56-year-old Bridgeport man who was run over by a tractor-trailer on Saturday on Wordin Street in a drug deal gone bad has been ruled a homicide and is not included in the state police tally.
