Later in the day, Stratford police stopped a BMW driven by Steven Carloto, 48, of Bridgeport, and arrested him on an unrelated warrant. While searching his vehicle, officers found coin rolls from Rita’s and burglar tools, Shelton police said.

The burglary occurred at Rita’s on River Road about 3:30 a.m. Thursday. Shelton patrol officers responded to a burglar alarm there and found the front door lock damaged and the safe missing, police said.

The surveillance video showed the suspect driving a dark BMW 3 Series, police said.

Carloto was charged with third-degree burglary, fourth-degree larceny, second-degree criminal mischief and possession of burglar tools in connection with the burglary. He appeared in court Friday, police said.

Police said Carloto is a suspect in other burglaries in the area and more arrests are expected.
