Suspect Charged with Check Forgery in Fairfield

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Fairfield police arrested Devon L. Police on Monday and charged the Bridgeport man, 28, with attempted theft and forgery relating to a check-cashing scam in Fairfield last fall.

A clerk at People’s Bank in the Stop & Shop on Kings Highway called police Nov. 6, 2011 to report a possible check forgery. The banker told officers a juvenile and Police came to the branch that morning to cash a check made out to Devon Police for $800. When the clerk identified the check as suspicious, the two fled in a car waiting outside, police said.

Officers said the check had been stolen from a local real estate company. Investigators said Police wrote the check out to himself and signed the owner’s name. Charges were filed Monday when Police appeared in court for unrelated charges.

Police was charged with second-degree forgery, criminal attempt to commit fifth-degree larceny and conspiracy. He was held on a $1,000 bond and appeared in court Monday.
