Suspect Charged In String Of Fairfield Car Break-Ins

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – A Bridgeport man has been charged in a string of car break-ins in the Stratfield section of Fairfield over the  summer, according to police reports.

Police received reports of break-ins to eight unlocked cars at seven addresses near Farmington Avenue early on Sept. 2. At one of the scenes, police got fingerprints from the door of a car that had lost $1,700 in valuables that day, according to police reports. Detectives connected the prints to David S. Belton, 19, of Bridgeport, police say.

Belton was arrested in Darien on Sept. 13 and charged in connection with 19 similar burglaries in that town, according to state judicial records. While he was in Darien custody, Fairfield Police interviewed Belton. He admitted to going in to the Stratfield neighborhood and checking for unlocked car doors on at least four occasions from June to September, police say.

Belton was charged with eight counts of third-degree burglary, a felony, one count of fourth-degree larceny and two counts of sixth-degree larceny, both misdemeanors.

He was held on $5,000 bond and arraigned in court  Wednesday.
