The man’s wife lay in the master bedroom with “blunt force and stab-like wounds” to her face near their 12-year-old son, who also sustained blunt-force trauma to the head and face, Fairfield Lt. James Perez said.
When a police officer arrived at the scene he was confronted in the driveway by the father, who was holding a weapon, and the son, who was still holding the bat, Perez said.
“The father refused to put down the weapon and just kept coming at (the officer),” he said.
The officer shot the father, who was pronounced dead at Bridgeport Hospital shortly after the 6 a.m. incident.
Perez said it appears the son saw his father shot, but it is unclear if the daughter was still standing nearby.
State Police Major Crime Squad detectives were investigating. State Police identified the deceased man as Christopher Andrews, 51, and Kathleen Andrews, 50, as the victim. The address of the home is 22 Mountain Laurel Road.
State police did not identify the juveniles or the officer, a veteran of the Fairfield police force.
Perez said the 15-year-old was sleeping in his room and woke to find his dad standing over him, brandishing the bat.
“Cops early on the scene said the kid grabbed the bat from his father as he was actually starting to hit him,” Perez said.
State and local police released no motive for the attack and cautioned that they were still investigating whether the father was definitely the attacker.
The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner has been notified and will conduct an autopsy to determine the cause and manner of death, according to a state police press release.
The mother was transported to Bridgeport Hospital and the children were transported to St. Vincent’s Medical Center. The youngest child was later transported to Yale-New Haven Hospital.
The road was expected to remain shut down into Tuesday evening as the investigation continued.
